ART DISPLAY OPENS TODAY IN DOWNTOWN CHRISTIANSBURG

The fifth annual Gallery of Local Artists opens today in the old Furniture Market building at the corner of Main and Franklin streets.

The gallery has been nomadic since its inception, moving to a different location each year.

Organizers hope the gallery may have found a permanent home in the Furniture Market building.

The opening is also kicking off a fund-raising push by the New River Arts Council for money to either buy or lease the building, recently vacated when the furniture store's owner retired.

Works at the gallery range in price from one dollar to thousands. Paintings, photographs, sculpture, stained glass, jewelry, pottery, books and postcards will be available.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. The gallery will be closed Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It will wrap up its run Dec. 31.

For more information, call the arts council at 381-1430.
