UVA ROLLS IN MEN'S SOCCER

Sophomore goalie Mark Peters needed to make only one save Sunday as Virginia began its quest for a fourth straight NCAA Division I men's soccer championship with a 3-0 victory in Charlottesville over Big South Conference champion North Carolina-Greensboro.

It was the 10th straight NCAA Tournament victory for the Cavaliers, who will entertain ACC rival Maryland (14-5-1) at 1 p.m. Nov.27 in the second round.

David Fitzmaurice scored Virginia's first goal on a pass from Mike Fisher with 36 minutes, 15 seconds gone in the first half. Tain Nix made it 2-0 only 90 seconds later, tipping in a ball that had been headed toward the goal by teammate Damian Silvera.

Mike Fisher scored the final goal for the Cavaliers (18-3-1), with assists from Fitzmaurice and Nix. It was the third shutout in the past four games for UVa, which had a 15-4 advantage in shots over the Spartans (17-5).

``By the score, it may have seemed it was won easy,'' said Bruce Arena, the Cavaliers' coach, ``but, it wasn't easy. They were a very tough team to play.''

In another NCAA Tournament game:

James Madison 3, North Carolina 0: In Chapel Hill, N.C., Patrick McSorley scored two goals to lead the Dukes (19-2-2) past the Tar Heels (13-7).

JMU advanced to a second-round matchup with Duke, a 2-1 winner over Florida International in overtime.

McSorley scored first at the 10:48 mark, heading a ball past North Carolina goalkeeper Dimitry Drouin. Kaarlo Kankkunen scored at the 24:19 mark. McSorley added a goal at the 57:39 mark.
