FOR THE RECORD, HIGH SCORER LOST

Steve Diekmann set a national small-college record Saturday night by scoring 69 points, teammate Ed Brands had 51 and their team had 148. And they lost by 19.

That will happen when the opponent shoots 80 percent.

Simpson made 60 of 75 field-goal attempts and beat Grinnell 167-148 in the championship game of the Grinnell (Iowa) Tip-Off Classic. David Otte scored 57 points for Simpson.

``I told David that I couldn't do this every night,'' Simpson coach Bruce Wilson said Sunday. ``It was just back and forth. My wife said her hands hurt because everybody was clapping all the time.

``But our kids had a great time. It was a great experience.''

Diekmann set an NCAA Division III single-game scoring record, breaking the mark of 63 by Joe DeRoche of Thomas against St. Joseph's, Maine, on Feb.1, 1988. The old Grinnell record was 60 by Diekmann against Coe last season.

The senior from Yankton, S.D., also tied his Division III record by making 14 3-pointers - on 30 attempts - and he became the school's career scoring leader with 1,611 points. Brands was 9-for-25 from 3-point range.

The 315 points combined also were a Division III record, topping the 305 by Grinnell and Illinois College last season.

Sunday's game

Tufts 80, Washington and Lee 74: In Lexington, Chris McMahon had 26 points to lead the Jumbos to a victory over the Generals in the championship game of the W&L Tip-Off Tournament.

Tufts (2-0) led throughout the first half, although the Generals (1-1) closed to 35-33 on a basket by Cam Dyer. Chad Onofrio then hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left in the half, and the Jumbos regained control by scoring the first eight points of the second half.

Onofrio and Eric Emmert each had 22 points for Tufts. Emmert also had nine rebounds.

The Generals were led by Mark Connelly with 16 points and Dyer with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

In the consolation game, Geneseo State defeated Amherst 85-77. Ian Tudman scored 25 points for Geneseo State (1-1). Amherst (0-2) led by as many as 10 early in the second half, but the Knights responded with 13 consecutive points and used a 10-point run to seal the victory.

Dan Keane added 22 points for Geneseo.

Amherst got 31 points from freshman John Pavelski and 22 points from Dan Moses.
