GUNMEN KILL 1, WOUND 2 IN RICHMOND PARKING LOT

At least two masked gunmen opened fire in a Richmond grocery store parking lot, killing one man and injuring two others, authorities said.

Witnesses to Sunday afternoon's shooting said 30 or more shots were fired as the gunmen walked onto the Mar-Ket parking lot, seemingly spraying bullets wildly.

Irving Doughty, 44, was shot in the head and back. He was declared dead moments after arrival at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals.

Robert Anthony Jefferson, 21, was shot in the head and chest and was in surgery Sunday night. Bruce Lee Ross, 24, was shot in the chest and right leg. He too was in surgery.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday night.

Police supervisor Lt. Paul S. Kiniry said detectives believe there were two gunmen. Some witnesses reported seeing a third gunman.

Police weren't sure what sparked the shooting.

``The way they were shooting, they didn't care who they hit,'' one witness said. ``They shot at anything that moved.''

The shooting occurred in an area of the city plagued by drugs and violence, police and neighbors said.

A new police precinct is being built across the street from the site.
