Raffle under way

CHRISTIANSBURG - Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the New River Valley is selling $1 raffle tickets to win a 22-inch, hand-painted pecan resin Santa figure.

The drawing is Dec. 12 at the group's office on East Main Street. The winner need not be present at the drawing.

Giles United Fund

PEARISBURG - The Giles County United Fund has reached the one-third mark in this year's fund-raising drive, raising $35,849 toward its goal of $110,000.

The figure does not include funds employers donate to match the employees' donations after the drive concludes.

The drive will continue until early December.

SHARE Virginia

CHRISTIANSBURG - SHARE Virginia, a non-profit food distribution and community service program, is offering food packages for $13 plus tax and 2 hours of community service at local stations throughout the New River Valley through Dec. 5. The packages include over 30 pounds of meats, fresh fruit and vegetables and dry goods. The packages are available as holiday gifts.

Aid for unemployed

FAIRLAWN - In cooperation with local 3-495 of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union, the Salvation Army will offer holiday assistance to Radford Army Ammunition Plant workers who are being laid off.

Salvation Army representatives will accept applications for toys and food baskets for workers and their families Nov. 30, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the union hall on Peppers Ferry Road. Applicants should provide proof of termination when applying for assistance. For more information, call The Salvation Army, 980-2400.
