UVA DUO HONORED FOR ACADEMICS

Running back Tiki Barber and offensive lineman Kenneth Buczynski, both of the University of Virginia, have been chosen for the 1994 GTE University Division Academic All-District III Football Squad.

Barber, a sophomore from Roanoke, is a pre-commerce major. Buczynski is a junior majoring in biochemistry and pre-medicine.

To be eligible for the award, both players had to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and be a starter or key reserve on the football team. Both players are now eligible for the national Academic All-America team, which will be announced on Dec. 13.

Hanging Rock Golf Club teaching pro Chip Sullivan finished tied with Mark McCumber for seventh at the $100,000 Gator Pro-Am in Gainesville, Fla.

Sullivan shot at 73-70 at the par-72 Gainsville Country Club to finish tied at 143 with McCumber, who won the PGA Tour Championship last month.

All five of the submissions of the name Salem Avalanche in the contest to name the Carolina League baseball team have been declared co-winners by the ballclub.

The winners were Scott Gregory of Collinsville; Jodie Nunley of Roanoke; Barbara Beckner of Vinton; Ed St.Clair of Salem; and Steven Snyder of Vinton.

All five will receive a pair of season tickets for the 1995 season, a baseball autographed by the members of the 1995 Avalanche and a chance to throw out the first pitch at a game during the upcoming season.

The original plan had been to select a winner by a drawing, but it was decided to make all five winners in the interests of fairness, Salem general manager Sam Lazzaro said.

The Nations Bank Holiday Hoops Classic at the Salem Civic Center Dec.26-28 will feature eight Timesland boys' basketball teams.

On the opening day, Rockbridge County takes on Cave Spring at 1 p.m., followed by Fieldale-Collinville against Northside at 3:45. At 6 p.m., Parry McCluer takes on William Byrd, while host Salem meets Franklin County in the 7:45 p.m. finale.

Losers' bracket games will be held on the afternoon of Dec.27 while winners' bracket contests will be played that night. Four games are also scheduled Dec. 28 along with a slam-dunk and 3-point shooting contest for the players.
