BUTNER, Fred Grandvell, 72, of Cleveland, Ohio, died Friday, November 18, 1994. Graveside service 11 a.m. Friday, November 25, 1994, West End Cemetery, Wytheville. Arrangements by Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va.

CARWILE, Walter DeWitt, 72, of Bedford, died Monday, November 21, 1994, at the Elks National Home. He was born March 13, 1922, in Rustburg (Campbell County), Va, a son of the late Walter DeWitt Carwile, Sr. and Hessie Mae Finch Carwile. He was educated in Campbell County Public Schools and graduated from Lynchburg College with his degree in Business Administration and Accounting. He was the retired Assistant Executive Director and Accountant of the Elks National Home, Bedford where he had served for over 32 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served with the 802nd Tank Destroyer Battalion in the invasion of the Normandy beachhead. He served in five major campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge and received two Purple Hearts, Good Conduct, American Theater, Mid-Eastern and World War II Victory medals. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Thaxton and a charter member of Brookhill Wesleyan Church, Goode. He served as Exalted Ruler of the Lynchburg Elks Lodge #321, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gideons and the Ruritan. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Wingfield Carwile; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathie C. and Wendell K. Johnson, Bedford, Cynthia C. and David D. Causer, Franklin, Tenn., Gwynne C. and Rev. Daniel D. Robinson, Arden, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, H. Oliver and Rebecca H. Carwile, Rustburg; one sister, Louise Carwile Hancock, Rustburg; also seven grandchildren, Heather A. Johnson, Rachael K. Johnson, David D. Causer Jr., Danielle N. Causer, Zacharias M. Robinson, Charis A. Robinson and Seth C. Robinson. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 25, 1994, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Daniel D. Robinson, Rev. Dr. Floyd J. Wingfield and Rev. Phil Hunsicker officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at the New Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Rustburg. DOOLEY, Samuel Isaac, 69, of Botetourt County, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 1994. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was retired from Kroger after 36 years of service. He was a member Roanoke Moose Lodge #284. Mr. Dooley was predeceased by a son, Richard Dooley and grandson, Sammy Dooley. Surviving are his wife, Blanche Grubbs Dooley; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Gene Proehl, Moneta; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Peggy Dooley, Wytheville, Don and Sandy Dooley, Joe Dooley, all of Roanoke; a brother, Wilber T. Dooley, Salem; nine grandchildren, Cheryl Gilliam and husband Rick, Dean Proehl, Jay Proehl, Todd Dooley, Jennifer Dooley, Angela Dooley, Amanda Dooley, B.J. Dooley, Jonathan Dooley; great-granddaughter, Sarah Gilliams. Funeral services will be at Oakey's North Chapel 11:30 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Steve Van Houten officiating. HARPER, Eva Helm 77, of Daleville, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 1994, at her home. She was a member of Connelly Memorial Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos S. Harper. She is survived by, her dear friend I. Conduff Conner; sister, Edna H. Doby; son and daughter-in-law, C. Alwyn and Sandra Harper; precious grandchildren, C. Patrick Harper, Kelly E. JONES, Edmund Wood, of Bowling Green, Va. and formerly of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, October 31, 1994, in Bowling Green Health Care Center, Bowling Green, Va. Mr. Jones, a native of Radford, and was the son of the late Nora Hartwell Jones and Fred Maund Jones. He and his family moved to Roanoke in 1956, and lived here until 1982, when he and his late wife, Evelyn Painter Jones, moved to Fredericksburg. Mr. Jones was always associated with the newspaper and printing businesses, and operated Littlejohn Printing Co. in Roanoke, and was later employed at Stone Printing Co. Mr. Jones was a member of Greene Memorial Church during the Roanoke years. He is survived by one sister, Helen Perry of Reston, Va.; two children, Emmy Bronson, Isle of Palms, S.C., Sanford Jones, Savannah, Ga.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 25, 1994, from 7 - 8 p.m. at Seaver-Sanders & Mullins, Radford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 26, 1994, at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Radford with the Rev. Joe Green officiating. Graveside services will follow at Westview Cemetery, Radford. LAYMAN, Sidney Leroy, 52, of Roanoke, died Monday, November 21, 1994. He was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey L. and Patricia Layman, Roanoke, Robert J. Layman, Check; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jon Snidow, Check; three grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren; his father and stepmother, Cecil and Bobbie Layman, Oregon. LYONS, Wiley Hix 89, of Galax, died Monday, November 21, 1994, in Laurel Meadows Nursing Home at Laurel Fork. Born in Carroll County on September 2, 1905 to Martin Luther Lyons and Sarah Belle Williamson. He was preceded in death by his wife Ada Mae Melton Lyons. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Hazel Lyons, Hillsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Katheline and Joe Givens, Kreemmling, Colo., Bonnie Lyons, Galax, Beulah and Keith Bryant, Austinville; six grandchildren, Joe David Givens, Nathan Lyons, Denton Bryant, Billy Bryant, Becky Sutton, Diane Miller; seven great-grandchildren. MOORE, James Henry, Sr., 67, of Lexington, died Monday, November 21, 1994. Born in Rockbridge County on April 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Graham Ross Moore and Mary Phobby Moore. He was a veteran of WWII and a self employed mechanic. He is survived by three sons, James H. Moore, Jr. and Daniel W. Moore, both of Lexington and David L. Moore, Buena Vista; four sisters, Cora Johnson, Ann Mays and Florence Horne, all of Lexington, Minnie K. Worth, Glasgow; two brothers, John C. Moore and Tom Moore, both of Lexington; two grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, November 25, 1994, at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Art Brumit officiating. MOORMAN, Mary Lizzle, 86 of Roanoke, passed away Monday, November 21, 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Moorman. Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Sterling and Helen Moorman, Roanoke, Clyde Lynch, Roanoke; two sisters, Estelle Bishop, Buffalo, N. Y., Clara Martin, Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Sterling Jr., William, Gerry and Dietria Moorman, all of Roanoke; one great-grandchild, Tasha Nicole Nicholas, Roanoke; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. PHIPPS, Verdie Bolt, 87, of Radford, died Tuesday, November 22, 1994, in a Roanoke Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steele Miller Phipps; her daughter, Betty Everhart Waid and her son, James Phipps. She was a member of Grove United Methodist Church in Radford. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Tucker of Amherst, Mrs. Donald (Patsy) Pafford of Alexandria, and Mrs. William (Barbara) Rouse of Albuquerque; one son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Iva Phipps of Radford; one sister, Elsa Davis Roller of Florida. Also survived by sixteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 25, 1994, at 11 a.m. from the Grove United Methodist Church in Radford with the Reverend Clarence Dishman officiating. REYNOLDS, Carl Lewis, 72, a certified land surveyor of Stony Creek, died Monday, November 21, 1994. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Mayes Reynolds; two daughters, Patricia Cabaniss of Fredericksburg, Charlotte Smith of Christiansburg; five grandchildren, Matthew, Carl and John Cabaniss, Emily and Benjamin Smith; two sisters, Charlotte Durett and Bessie Allen both of Bowling Green. She was retired from American Viscose, a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney J. Roop. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. SHEPPARD, William Conway, 84, of Christiansburg, died Monday, November 21, 1994, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. SLUSHER, Callie Weeks, 93, of Floyd passed away Tuesday, November 22, 1994, at her home. Mrs. Slusher is survived by her husband, George L. Slusher with whom she celebrated her seventieth wedding anniversary on November 19, 1994. Other survivors included two sons and daughters-in-law, Maurice and Nadine Slusher of Floyd, Va., Lane and Nina Slusher of Osage City, Kansas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Carnice Mannon of Floyd, Va., Jane and Deward Williams, Floyd, Va.; six grandsons, six granddaughters; 19 great-grandchildren; special friends, Reda Goad, Mae Leonard, Corene Sowers. SUTTON, John Wesley Jr., 69, of Roanoke County, died Tuesday, November 22, 1994, at his home. He grew up in Ingold, N.C. Mr. Sutton was a Navy veteran of World War II, a retired bookkeeper with Roanoke Ready Mix and a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty L. Sutton, Roanoke County; daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Don Field, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Becky Sutton, Richmond; son, Charles Sutton, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Scott Sutton, Daniel Field, and Joel Field; three stepgrandchildren, Tom Field, Karen Starrett, and Jim Field; three sisters, Margaret Williamson, Jeanette Balkcun, and Frances Smith, all of Clinton, N.C.; two brothers, Mack Sutton, Rosehill, N.C. and Horace Sutton, Ingold, N.C.
