HASKINS, COLQUITT TOP TEAM

Nine players from league champion Marshall, including former Salem High School punter Travis Colquitt, joined VMI tailback Thomas Haskins on the 1994 All-Southern Conference football team announced Tuesday.

Marshall's other first-team selections were quarterback Todd Donnan, tailback Chris Parker, tackle William Pannell, guard Aaron Ferguson, defensive linemen Billy Lyon and B.J. Cohen and defensive backs Shannon Morrison and Roger Johnson. The squad was chosen by 50 voting members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association.

Colquitt, a senior, is averaging 45.4 yards per punt this season. The Thundering Herd also ranks first in the conference in net punting (42.9).

Haskins, a sophomore, rushed for a conference-leading 1,509 yards this season to lead the Keydets.

Conference runner-up Appalachian State had five players on the first team, including linebacker Dexter Coakley who was the only unanimous selection. Western Carolina also had five players on the first team.

Coakley leads the conference in tackles with 141. He has 20 tackles for losses and eight sacks. His teammates on the first team are guard Brad Ohrt, defensive linemen William Peebles and Chip Miller and defensive back Matt Stevens. Peebles ranks third in the conference in tackles with 136 and leads the league in tackles for loss with 22 and sacks with 111/2.

Western Carolina's first-team contingent consists of wide receiver Craig Aiken, center Wes Greenwell, kick-returner Kerry Hayes, linebacker Tom Bodine and defensive back Jon Jenkins. Aiken has 43 receptions for 772 yards and six touchdowns, while Hayes accumulated 385 return yards despite missing three games with a knee injury.

Other players named to the first team were Tennessee-Chattanooga tight end Demarko Kemp, East Tennessee State wide receiver Jeff Johnson, Furman offensive tackle Brian Fisher and kicker Jim Richter and The Citadel linebacker Micah Young.

VMI junior Terry Tucker was named to the second team at defensive back.
