RONDE BARBER MAKES HISTORY

Virginia defensive back Ronde Barber on Tuesday became the first UVa freshman to make first-team All-ACC in football.

Named to the second team was Wake Forest defensive back Richard Goodpasture, a Salem High School alumnus who was the Deacons' only representative on the first two teams.

Barber, from Cave Spring High School, was joined on the first team by Cavaliers defensive end Mike Frederick. Four UVa players were named to the second team.

Dominating the selections was Florida State, which was undefeated in ACC play for the third time in as many seasons and had 10 first-team selections. Duke was next with four, followed by North Carolina State with three.

Barber, who leads the ACC in interceptions and pass break-ups, was the lone freshman to make the first team. He is a leading candidate for ACC rookie of the year.

Five awards will be announced next week: coach of the year, player of the year, offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year and rookie of the year.

``People have been talking about my chances for rookie of the year since the start of the season,'' Barber said Tuesday night. ``Making first-team All-ACC kind of caught me by surprise. It's a great compliment.''

Duke tailback Rob Baldwin received 77 first-place votes and was the only unanimous selection. Florida State linebacker Derrick Brooks, suspended for two games for accepting extra benefits, was the top vote-getter on defense, with 72 votes.

Seminoles guard Patrick McNeil made the first team, despite missing four games because of his involvement in an agent-sponsored shopping spree at a Foot Locker store in Tallahassee, Fla.

Brooks was one of five repeat first-team selections for Florida State, along with wide receiver Kez McCorvey, center Clay Shiver, defensive end Derrick Alexander and defensive back Clifton Abraham.

The only other repeaters were N.C. State wide receiver Eddie Goines, Steve Videtich and linebacker Damien Covington.

The closest race was at quarterback, where Florida State junior Danny Kanell had 72 points, compared to 70 for Maryland junior Scott Milanovich. Two points were awarded for a first-place vote and one for a second-place vote.

Goines, whose season ended when he suffered a knee injury in the eighth game, finished four points ahead of Virginia's Tyrone Davis for the second spot at wide receiver.

It was the first time Davis had been named first-, second- or third-team All-ACC, despite 28 career touchdown receptions, second in conference history. Davis has an ACC-high 10 touchdown catches this season.

Other UVa players named to the second team were defensive tackle Ryan Kuehl, linebacker Jamie Sharper and punter Will Brice. The Cavaliers, who entertain N.C. State on Friday, rank first in NCAA Division I-A in rushing defense.

Frederick's selection to the first team helps cap an illustrious career that includes 49 tackles for loss and 25 sacks.
