BASILE, Mabel Louise, 84, of Roanoke, passed to immortality on Tuesday, November 22 , 1994. She was the widow of Joseph Michael Basile, M.D, (1887-1975). Born on September 23, 1910, to Zina and Thomas Abbas in Youngstown, Ohio, she is survived by her sons, Michael Joseph Basile, M.D. and Vincent Thomas Basile, M.D., who reside in Roanoke with wives Bernardine and Mary Zipporah respectively. Also surviving are grandchildren, Nicole, Brigitte, Dominic and Zipporah, Joseph and Thomas; sisters, Minnie, Molly Adelaide, Abla, Stella and Josephine; brothers Joseph and John. Her eldest brother Abbie preceded her in death. She was a proud graduate of East High School. After raising her family she matriculated Youngstown State University and in 1969 at the age of 58 received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She taught at St. Edwards' Grade School and, after retirement, continued as a substitute teacher in the Youngstown City Schools. Beginning at age 73 she became an artist of some aggressive color style recognized by several critics and professional artists as a unique display of blooming talent. She exhibited at Roanoke Virginia's Festival in the Park and the County Fair at Canfield, Ohio. She was a devoted nurturing mother to her last days. We pray for her soul. Requiem in pacem. She had been a life long active member of St. Maron's Maronite Catholic Church, Meridian Road, Youngstown, Ohio. Funeral services will be held there at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 26, followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery. BECKNER, David Jackson, 41, of Route 1, Callaway died Tuesday, November 22, 1994, at his home. Surviving are his wife, Brenda M. BEINKAMPER, Jack Richard, 68, of Memphis, Tenn., died Tuesday, November 22, 1994 in a Memphis, Tenn. hospital. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Navy and the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the masonic lodge and a shriner. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Peggy Geary of Memphis, Tenn.; two cousins, Frank Beinkamper of Dayton, Ohio, Eleanor Sutphin of Radford; also four nieces; two nephews. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at Devilbiss Funeral Home prior to the graveside service. BOWER, Hazel B., 83, of Roanoke, died Monday, November 21, 1994. She was a lifelong member and Deaconness of First Church of the Brethren, where she also served as Church organist and pianist. Mrs. Bower was a 15 year volunteer at Community Hospital of Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harman J. Bower; and two sons, H. Jay Bower Jr. and Daniel F. Bower. Surviving are two daughters, Peggy B. Metzger, York, Pa., Susan B. Sutphin and her husband, William, Seymour, Tenn.; a son, Ronald E. Bower, San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren, John E. Metzger, Gregory B. Metzger, H. Scott Metzger, Kristopher M. Bower, Daniel D. Sutphin, Cristin R. Sutphin, Juliet B. Sutphin; and three great-grandchildren, Elliot G. Metzger, Bennett A. BRENT, William S., 94 of Salem, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 1994. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in Siberia, Russia and a sergeant of Company (E) of the 31st Infantry. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity since 1931, having become in 1942 PDGM, Tuckahoe Lodge #347, Richmond. He was retired from the Commonwealth Virginia after 39 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Hanna (Tina) C. Brent; daughter, Mrs. T. D. (Molly) Todd; stepson, Jerry; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two half-sisters; one half-brothers. CAMPBELL, V. Daphene, 89, of Roanoke, died Tuesday evening, November 22, 1994, in a local hospital. She was the widow of George Lewis Campbell, a member of Belmont United Methodist Church for over 78 years, a graduate of Radford College (now University), a retired teacher from Roanoke County Schools (where she taught at Clearbrook Elementary School), a member of the Retired Teacher's Association, a member and former officer of the Womens Society of Christian Service, and a member of the Sequoia Club. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Everett Smith, Columbia, S.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, George and Kim Campbell, Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Gretchen Boeren, Carol Carter, LeAnn Bean, Warren Campbell; a great-granddaughter, Sarah Boeren; five sisters, Marjorie Burnette, Roanoke, Ruth Dickerson, Salem, Pauline Ramsey, Roanoke, Joyce Hankla, Dublin, Glade Burnette, Roanoke; and a number of nieces and nephews. CLARKE, John C., 72, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Wednesday, November 23, 1994, at his home. He was born in Brunswick County and was retired after 40 years with American Automobile Association, where he was Division Manager. Mr. Clarke was a former owner of AAA Driver Training School, Roanoke and Folly Rec-land Campground at Smith Mountain Lake. He was a dealer for Appalachian Log Structures. He was a former president of the Exchange Club, Fraternal Order of Police Associates, and the Roanoke Valley Safety Council. Mr. Clarke was also a former member of the Showtimers and a Army Veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Anne P. Clarke, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Judge Joseph M. and Vickie R. Clarke, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Judith L. Clarke and Nicholas Martin-Smith, New York, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Sarah and John Clarke, Roanoke; two sisters, Ethel C. Palmer, Lawrenceville, Virginia H. Clarke, Washington, D.C. COFFEY, John Henry, 78, of Buena Vista, died Wednesday, November 23, 1994, at his home after a long illness. He was born February 16, 1916, son of the late Lafayette and Annie Ward Coffey. He retired from the Natural Bridge Learning Center in 1981. He was a member of Jehovah's witnesses. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ogden Coffey; son and daughter-in-law, Philip A. and Martha Coffey of Roanoke, son, Garry W. LEFFLER, Boyd Owen, 72, of Salem, died Tuesday, November 22, 1994 in Lewis Gale Hospital. He retired in 1988 from the Salem VA Medical Center where he worked many years as a medical illustrator. He was also a well established artist, a devoted father who independently raised his children after the death of their mother, and also was a Merchant Marine during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn L. Leffler and a daughter, Cynthia Leffler. Survivors include a son, Boyd Quintin Leffler, Salem; three daughters, Pamela Leffler, Salem, Beth L. Steele, Vinton, Ann and husband, Perry Terrell, Roanoke; six grandchildren; a brother, Cecil Leffler, Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Doris Purser, Blackfoot, Idaho. LORTON, William D. Jr., 79, of Radford, died at his residence Tuesday, November 22, 1994. Mr. Lorton, a Radford Native, was Chief of Police of the City of Radford until his retirement in 1975. He was engaged in law enforcement for 28 years. He was a graduate of the F. B. I. National Academy, Past Presient of the National F. B. I. Academy Associates of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Past President of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. He served as director of the first New River Valley Regional Police Academy at New River Community College. He was a 45 year member of the Virginia May Masonic Lodge #38 A. F. & A. M., and Past President of the Radford Montgomery Shrine Club. He was also a member of the First Christian Church in Radford. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Rotenberry Lorton; a daughter, Lois Horton; a grandson, David Horton and a granddaughter, Beth Stephens and grandson-in-law, Scott Stephens, and a brother-in-law, Jerry S. Lovern. Also survived by two nieces. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. November 25, 1994 at the First Christian Church in Radford with Dr. Gina Rhea officiating. MAXFIELD, Trudy Smith, 47, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 1994, at her residence. She was born April 20, 1947, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late James Rufus Smith and Christine Mayhew Smith, of Bedford, who survives. She was an employee of the Rubatex Corporation and attented the Quaker Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Tony B. Maxfield; a son, Tracy Blair Maxfield, of the home; nine sisters and brothers-in-law, Bevie S. and Kenneth Johnson, Martha S. and Clyde Smith, Julia Ann S. and Enoch Bruner, Jeanette S. and Greenwood Overstreet, Marilyn S. and Jackson Overstreet, Particia S. and Kelly Maxfield, Sybil S. and Mike Wray, all of Bedford, Iris S. and Richard Blankenship, Moneta, Lula S. and Robert Moore, Homer, Alaska; a brother & si ster-in-law, James W. and Mildred Smith, Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 25, 1994, at 1 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Jack Scaggs and Rev. Ken Burger. Interment will follow in the Quaker Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.
OWEN, William Harold, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 1994. He was born in Bedford County and was raised in Hailfax County. He came to Roanoke in 1935, where he remained as a local businessman, until his retirement in 1980. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Nell Lyon Owen; one son, William Rodney Owen, Roanoke; two brothers and one sister, L. Carter Owen, Clifford T. Owen, and Jeanette Owen Anderson; a ll of South Boston. Funeral services will be at Oakey's North Chapel 11:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. George M. Pearson Jr. officiating. She was a charter member of the 49ers + Senior Citizen Center, Salem and was a member of Central United Methodist Church for 66 years. She is survived by her son, James E.
