STUDENTS LEARN THROUGH TEDDYS' TRAVELS

About 40 furry, brown teddy bears have embarked on a long journey.

The bears are part of the Traveling Teddy program at R.S. Payne Elementary School. Fifth-grade students each received a bear and filled a backpack with a letter, postcard stamp and class picture.

The bears on Tuesday were given to friendly adults who would take them on traveling excursions and possibly pass them on to others. From each new place, the bear's traveling companion is asked to send a postcard to the child at school and return the bear by March 1.

When the bears come back, students will create videotaped reports on where the bear has been and how far it has traveled, said school librarian Charlene Crump.

Teachers plan to use the bears to help teach students social studies, math, language and map skills, she said.
