BLACKSBURG JEWISH COMMUNITY KICKS OFF HANUKKAH WITH PARTY

Jews around the world observe HANUKKAH - the eight-day "Festival of Lights" - beginning Sunday at sundown. The Blacksburg Jewish Community holds a Hanukkah party Sunday, Dec. 4, 1-4 p.m., at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. All are welcome, but reservations are requested. Call Etty Vandsburger, 552-9234, or Rebecca Scheckler, 951-0172. A potluck luncheon will be served and there will be presents for the youngsters. Those attending are welcome to bring a menorah.

Hanukkah - also sometimes spelled Hanuka or Chanukah - marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem by Judas Maccabaeus following the overthrow of the

Hellenic Syrians in 165 B.C. When the Jews returned to the temple, there was only enough oil to light the altar lamp for one day, but it lasted eight days.

To commemorate the miracle, Jewish families light one candle on a menorah, a traditional candleholder, each night of The Festival of Lights. Gifts also may be exchanged.

Through its CHRISTMAS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM, the Salvation Army hopes to make the holidays a little brighter for those Radford Army Ammunition Plant workers scheduled to be laid off in November and December. In cooperation with the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union, Salvation Army representatives process applications for assistance Wednesday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the OCAW union hall, Peppers Ferry Road, Fairlawn.

Eligible families receive food baskets and Christmas toys. Applicants should provide layoff notice, legal identification, and youngsters' Social Security numbers and birth certificates.
