HIPPENSTEEL WINS IN TENNIS

Roanoke's K.J. Hippensteel won singles and doubles matches Friday in the U.S. Tennis Association National Indoor Championships at the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago.

In singles play, Hippensteel advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over David Ruttenberg.

In doubles, Hippensteel and Philip Nguyen of Lancaster, Pa., defeated Bo Hodges and Jackie Jenkins 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. The duo went on the beat Ramon Smiley of New Jersey and Julian Brown of New York City 6-4, 6-3 in a quarterfinal match.

There will be racing in all classes at the Franklin County Speedway Turkey Derby today at 3 p.m. The gates open at noon. Admission is $5 for adults, no charge for children 10 and under.
