DUI CHARGE FILED IN FATAL I-64 WRECK

An early morning accident in Alleghany County that killed one person Friday may not have been caused by a deer in the road.

State Police Trooper Scott Settle said the accident occured on Interstate 64 just past Exit 24 about 4 a.m. The driver, Jason Davis, told Settle a deer had jumped onto the road.

Davis said he swerved to miss the deer, striking a culvert and rolling several times.

Robert W. Hollins, 33, was killed almost instantly after he was thrown from the car. The Clifton Forge man was a back-seat passenger, Settle said.

Settle said Davis has been charged with driving under the influence. Settle said he was not sure whether a deer was the cause.

Davis and two other passengers were taken to Alleghany Regional Hospital. Davis was treated and released, according to a nursing supervisor. Additional information on the other passengers was unavailable.
