GERMAN TEACHER, EX-DEAN OF W&L DIES AT AGE 84

William Webb Pusey III, retired professor of German, dean and one-time acting president of Washington and Lee University, died Friday of pneumonia at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was 84.

Pusey joined the college's faculty in 1939 as an associate professor of German. He served as dean of the university from 1960 to 1971, and as acting president in 1967 and 1968. He retired in 1981.

Pusey is credited with numerous improvements at the college during his 11 years as dean, including doubling teachers' salaries, expanding research opportunities for faculty and students and reorganizing the university curriculum.

He received degrees from Haverford College, Harvard University and Columbia University.
