BRUIN, Mackall Rust Jr., 92, of Route 1, Box 237, Draper, passed away Friday evening, November 25, 1994, in the Radford Community Hospital. Born June 15, 1902 in Strasburg, Va. (Shenandoah County), he was the son of the late Dr. Mackall Rust Bruin and Mary Hartsock Lewis Bruin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Pearl Coffey Bruin, and son, Mackall Rust Bruin III. He was a graduate of Washington & Lee University, where he was a member of the W & L football team. He received his Masters degree from the University of Virginia. He was a teacher, coach and principal at Big Island, Va. and Boynton, Va. He was the Assistant Head Master for the Franklin Day School for Boys, Baltimore, Maryland. He served as Assistant Principal, Principal, Science Instructor, and Football Coach for the Falls Church High School, Falls Church, Va. He was the Dean and Business Manager for Southeastern University, Washington, D.C. and the Chemistry Instructor and Head of Science Department for Herndon High School, Herndon, Va. He served as Vice-President of the Bedford County Teachers Assoc., the President of Mecklenburg County Teachers Assoc., Chairman of the Fairfax County Principal's Assoc. and the offices of President, Secretary and Treasurer for the Virginia State Principal's Assoc. He had two articles published in Virginia Educational magazines. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge for 70 years. He served two years as Worshipful Master and during the last 70 years, he was a member of the Strasburg, Big Island, Boynton, Baltimore, Falls Church, Herndon and Snowville Lodges. He was a member of the Royal Arch Chapter since 1925, and Commandery of Knight's Temple since 1926. He joined the Ancient Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in 1937, Boumi Temple, Baltimore, Maryland and transferred to Kena Temple and later Kazim Temple. He was a member of the Lions Club for 50 years in Falls Church, Va., Herndon, Va., and Pulaski. He held the offices of President, Zone Chairman and Secretary-Treasurer of District 24C. He was a member of the Pulaski County Farm Bureau for over 35 years, where he held the offices of President, Vice President and served on the Board of Directors for over 15 years. He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church since 1916. He has served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Elder and Elder-Emeritas of the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church, Draper, Va. He was an active member of the Ruritan Club since 1963. He has been a member of the Draper Valley Volunteer Fire Department since 1963. He was a Charter member and officer in the Boynton Vo lunteer Fire Dept., Boynton, Va. and the Herndon Volunteer Fire Dept., Herndon, Va. Since 1967, he has spent part of the winter months in Mexico, where he visited many Mayan villages and Presbyterian churches in the surrounding areas. Since 1957, he has operated a 315 acre farm near Draper, where grass, hay and cattle were raised. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Robert V. and Mary Jane Bruin Lester, Wytheville; grandchildren, Sarah Shaw Bruin, David Bruin Lester and wife, Brenda Kay Lester, Virginia Anne Lester Smith; two great-grandchildren, David Bruin Lester II and Christopher Michael Lester; one daughter-in-law, Gay White Bruin Ruff, Woodbridge, Va. Funeral services will be held Monday, 11 a.m, at the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church, Draper, with the Rev. Preston O. Sartelle officiating. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the Bower Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Snowville Lodge #159. CROWDER, Carrie Hill, 80, of Route 2, Fries, died Friday, November 25, 1994, in Twin County Regional Hospital. She was born in Carroll County, November 28, 1913, to M. K. Hill and Leavie Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gilmer Crowder. Mrs. Crowder is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth C. and William (Bill) Landreth of Fries; a daughter-in-law, Linda A. DUNBAR, Ann Patton, 77, a lifetime native of Roanoke, died Friday morning, November 25, 1994, at the home of her niece, Barbara Umberger Johnson, 213 West Springs Road, Columbia, S. C., where she was convalescing from Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Born in Norton, Va. she was the daughter of the late Irene Ratcliff Patton and Norman Edward Patton. Surviving is a son, Larry Wayne Dunbar of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Crystal, Brent, Courtney and Carrie Beth; a brother, David Patton of Waynesboro; several nieces and nephews in Nashville, Tenn. Mrs. Dunbar was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 40 years serving many of those years as Sunday School Teacher and also co-founder of the Thrift Shop Ministry. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 28 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamson Road and Epperley Avenue, N.W., with the Rev. Kenneth Lane officiating. FLOYD, Emmett Thurman, 69, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, November 26, 1994 in a Lexington Hospital. He was born October 14, 1925 in Rockbridge County, the son of the late Orie and Bertha Coleman Floyd. He was a WWII veteran. He was preceded in death, in 1994, by a son, Allen Floyd, of Swope. Surviving are his wife, Inez Moss Floyd; one son, Eric Dale Floyd, Walnut Creek, Calif.; two daughters, Dona Ellinger, Waynesboro, Nona Allen, Crozet; one stepdaughter, Linda Kitchen, Emporia; two stepsons, Steve Finch, Richmond, Terry Finch, Silver Springs, Md.; one brother, Rev. GLASS, Andrew Carper, ``Andy"", 76, of Lanexa, Va. died Friday, November 25, 1994, in Williamsburg Community Hospital. Mr. Glass was a native of Roanoke and a former resident of Hampton and Northern Va. before moving to Lanexa in 1981. Mr. Glass was a graduate of V.P.I. class of 1941. He retired in 1981 after 26 years from civil service with the Department of the A ir Force in Washington, D.C. Mr. Glass was a former member, Elder and Deacon of the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in Northern Va. He was a veteran of World War II with U.S. Public Health Service attached to the Army serving in Italy. He was a member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and a member of the Hampton Kawanis, a charter member of the Wythe-Hampton Exchange Club and past member of the Jamestown Lions Club. Mr. Glass is survived by his wife of 51 years, Louise M. Glass; a daughter, Patricia G. Little of Springfield; a son, David A. Glass of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a brother, Stuart J. Glass of Hampton; and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 at the Bucktrout Funeral Home. JAMISON, James Clark Sr., 71, of Boones Mill, passed away Saturday, November 26, 1994 in a Roanoke hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Jamison was a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and life-long member of Fairmont Baptist Church. He was also a member of Issacs Masonic Lodge #29 and Callaway Ruritan Club. Mr. Jamison was a retiree from DuPont, with 29 years service and owner of Haplo Dairy Farm. Surviving are his wife, Marie Flora Jamison; sons and daughters-in-law, J. Clark and Shirley B. Jamison, Fred M. and Linda P. Jamison, Lynn E. and Deidra S. Jamison; two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda F. Jamison and Lisa J. and Kevin B. Bowling. Five grandchildren, Laura, Emily, Rebecca, Jena, and James Clark ``Trey"" Jamison; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby and Galen Brubaker, Anita and Tom Crowson; and sister-in-law, Mildred Jamison survive him, as do many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. KORONA, Michael, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, November 26, 1994. He was a native of Amsterdam, N.Y. Mr. Korona began his employment with General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. He was transferred to Salem G.E. in 1956 and retired from there in 1978 as Supervisor of Quality Control. Mr. Korona was also a former employee of Oakey's South Chapel. Surviving are his wife, Anne K. Korona, Roanoke Co.; daughters and sons-in-law, Susanne and Ned Hayes, Michele and William Humphries, Andrea and Barry Flora, Margaret and Andrew Harvey III, all of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa Korona, Arlington; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, D elores Lasky and Loretta Gusti, both of Amsterdam, N.Y; several nieces and nephews, including a niece, Joan Alouf, Roanoke. McGRADY, Jordan Dawes, 69, of Hillsville, Va., passed away Friday, November 25, 1994, at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was born September 14, 1925 in Carroll County, Va. the son of the late Herman McGrady and Mary Hester Bowman McGrady. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Mr. McGrady returned to Carroll County to work at the Guynn Furniture and Hardware in Hillsville. He worked there until the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel Funeral Home was opened in 1952. He was a stockholder of and served as Secretary/Treasurer of Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady in Hillsville, Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax and the Guynn Realty Corporation of Galax, as well as manager of the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel for 42 years until his retirement October 1, 1994. He was an active member and past president of the Hillsville Rotary Club. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Sue Gardner McGrady; two sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia Bowman, Hillsville, June and Guy Bowman, Woodlawn; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday, November 28, 1994 at 11 a.m. at the Hillsville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nathan Malone officiating. PROFFITT, Ralph Edward, 79, of 1512 Grove Drive, Pulaski, died Thursday, November 24,1994 in Pulaski Community Hospital. Born March 6, 1915 in Floyd County, Va., he was the son of the late John Brown Proffitt and Roxie Mills Proffitt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Keister Proffitt. Mr. Proffitt had retired from Hercules Powder Company after thirty-five years, retiring as Office Supt. for Accounting. He is survived by one son, Randall Proffitt, Blacksburg; one brother, Frank Proffitt, Christiansburg; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jack Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. PUSEY, William Webb III, of Lexington, died Friday, November 25, 1994, in the University of Virginia Hospital. He was born on November 16, 1910 in Wilmington, Delaware, and was the son of the late William Webb Pusey II and Edith Lobdell Pusey. He attended Wilmington Friends School and received a B.A. from Haverford College, an M.A. from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and ODK honor societies. During World War II, he served in the U.S Navy in Naval intelligence. Dr. Pusey was named Dean Emeritus and S. Blount Mason Jr. Professor of German Emeritus upon his retirement from Washington & Lee University after 42 years of teaching and service. He joined the faculty in 1939 and served as Dean of the College, acting President, Chairman of the German Department and Director of the Chinese Studies Program. During his tenure as Dean of the College, he directed a series of changes that had a profound impact on Washington & Lee, including: the doubling of faculty salaries, which enabled W & L to attract and keep top-flight teachers; curriculum enhancements, which greatly increased the number of courses in arts and sciences; and a major expansion of research opportunities for both faculty and students. In 1981, the Pusey Award was created, an award given annually to a member of the faculty or administration who has shown outstanding service and dedication to Washington & Lee. Dr. Pusey was also a noted scholar and published extensively on the topics of language, literature and local history, and was the author of Louis-Sebastien Mercier in Germany and co-author of Readings in Military German. Over the years, he contributed more than 200 book reviews to the Sunday edition of the Roanoke Times. Active in the Lexington community, Dr. Pusey served on the Lexington and Rockbridge County School Boards, was a director ofthe local Boy's Club, a member of the League of Women Voters, and a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church. In 1990, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Mary Hope Smith Pusey. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Faith Pankin of Arlington, Diana Pickral of Charlottesville; and two grandchildren, Michael and Mary Hope Pickral of Charlottesville. She was the widow of Frederick Scanlon Smith.
