Wendy Palmer scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Cavaliers held off a late charge to post a 60-56 victory over Arizona in the consolation round.
After Palmer sparked UVa (1-1) to a 35-16 lead midway through the first half, but the Wildcats (0-2) rallied in the second half and closed to 55-51 after a 30-17 run during which Jacinda Sweet scored 16 of her 18 points.
But the Cavaliers held on.
Georgia State 78, Radford 77: In Cullowhee, N.C., Angela Anderson made two free throws with 15 seconds left to give the Panthers (1-0) their only lead of the game as they upset the Highlanders (0-1) in the opening round of the Best Western-Great Smokies Inn Turkey Tip-Off.
Anderson's winning free throws capped a tremendous comeback by Georgia State, which trailed by 10 at halftime and by 21 with 15 minutes left in the game.
All five starters for Radford (0-1) scored in double figures, led by Jenny Goode with 22 points.
The Highlanders will face Morehead State in the consolation game at 2 p.m. today; Georgia State meets Western Carolina in the championship game at 4:30 p.m.
Ferrum 64, Oglethorpe 60: In Savannah, Ga., Aimee Barker's 3-pointer with 1:20 left helped the Panthers (3-0) hold off Oglethorpe (1-2) in the first round of the Savannah College of Art and Design Tip-Off Classic.
Glossary Smith scored a game-high 21 points for Ferrum
The Panthers advance to the championship game at 1 p.m. today against Emory, a 77-68 winner over Methodist.
