`Hooked on Phonics'

RADFORD - The Radford Public Library recently purchased "Hooked on Phonics," an intensive, systematic reading program and will offer its use during library hours. Patrons may call the library in advance at 731-3621 to reserve the program and study room.

World AIDS Day

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech Student Health Services will sponsor World AIDS Day activities Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in front of War Memorial Chapel. Rob Morrow of the New River Valley AIDS Coalition will speak and lead a candlelight walk to Burruss Hall. Chi Delta Alpha, Golden Key Honor Society and Eta Sigma Delta will cosponsor the event. YMCA Thrift Shop

BLACKSBURG - The YMCA Thrift Shop on South Main will accept its last donations for 1994 on Dec. 17. The store will be closed Dec. 18-Jan. 2.

Downtown forum

BLACKSBURG - A forum on the future of downtown Blacksburg will be held Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at community center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive.

The forum - part of a study of the central residential and business districts - will give residents a chance to comment and help set priorities on land-use ideas. Results of the study will include a land-use vision for downtown area and recommended changes to town policies and regulations to achieve it. The forum is sponsored by the town Planning and Engineering Department. Call Duane Hyde, 961-1114.

School plans benefit

FLOYD - Blue Mountain School will hold its annual Arts, Crafts and Services Auction at the school Dec. 10, 11 a.m. Items were donated by artists and artisans from around Floyd County and the United States. In addition a wide variety of services will be available for bid. Call 745-4234 or 745-3381.

Winter graduation

RADFORD - The first formal winter graduation in 20 years will be held at Radford University Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. in Dedmon Center. More than 400 students will receive their degrees then, instead of waiting until May to graduate.

Planned speakers include Acting President Charles Owens and sociology department Chairman Stephen Lerch. The 1995 Senior Class Council and a group of rising seniors worked with the commencement committee to establish the December ceremony.
