ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The Consumer Price Index increased 0.1 percent in October, meaning, for the year to date, inflation is running at an annual rate of 2.6 percent.

At the end of October, the index stood at 149.5 points, compared with 149.4 in September and 145.7 a year ago. That means goods and services that cost $145.70 a year ago cost $149.50 at the end of last month.

The index is based on an average of prices between 1982 and 1984.

Coal loadings by the Norfolk Southern Corp., also added to the regional economic indicators Monday, were reduced by the shorter Thanksgiving workweek. Still, the loadings were off 5.8 percent from the comparable holiday week a year ago.
