HIPPENSTEEL LOSES IN DOUBLES FINAL

Roanoke's K.J. Hippensteel finished second in doubles and third in singles as the United States Tennis Association's National Indoors Championships concluded Monday in Chicago.

Hippensteel and doubles partner Phillip Nguyen of Lancaster, Pa., lost their championship match in the Boys 14 division against Ben Cox of Spring Lake, Mich., and Isaac Yarnell of Cincinnati, Ohio, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7). Hippensteel and Nguyen were the top seeds.

Hippensteel, also the top seed in the Boys 14 singles division, finished third with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Travis Parrott of Portland, Ore.

In other sports news in the region:

Glenvar's Trish Nervo, the three-time Group A girls' state cross country champion, ran sixth in the Footlocker South Atlantic regional championships this past weekend at Charlotte.

The meet, which is for top high school runners in each state, leads to the national championships at San Diego on Dec. 10. The top eight in each regional race, 32 runners, qualify for the nationals.

Nervo ran 10th in the South Atlantic meet a year ago and was an alternate for the nationals. This year's regional winner was Group AAA champion Jackie Kerr, a sophomore at Thomas Jefferson in Fairfax. She ran a time of 17:10, about 20 seconds faster than Nervo, who is a junior.

Brandon Horton of Hillsville led a group of five local competitors to place in the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick Championship on Sunday at halftime of the Redskins-Giants game. Horton finished second in the Age 8 division with a total score of 142 feet, 7 inches. Lexington's Kevin Coale finished third in the Age 9 division (146-7), Wytheville's Lance Goff was third in Age 12 (223-9), Galax's Jacob Beamer was third in Age 15 (266-6) and Christiansburg's Nicholas Yopp finished sixth in Age 14 at 106-8.

Roanoke senior Kyle Highfill was named Monday to the second team of the College Division GTE Academic All-District III volleyball team. Highfill, a graduate of Cave Spring High School, helped lead the Maroons to a 17-6 record, their best mark in 15 years.

The first games of the Timesland basketball season are tonight when Roanoke Valley Christian plays host to Tri-Cities Christian in a double-header.

In other games, Carlisle is at Westchester and Lynchburg Christian visits Covington Boys' Home.

Abe Goldblatt, a sports writer for The Virginian-Pilot for 63 years, has died at age 79.

He died Saturday following complications from open-heart surgery.

Goldblatt began covering high school sports for the Norfolk newspaper as a stringer in 1931, two years before he graduated from Wilson High School. He became a full-time reporter in 1933 when he graduated.
