KEYDETS EARN BELLAIRS FIRST WIN

In Lexington, VMI's Warren Johnson scored 21 points and Lawrence Gullette added 18 points and 10 rebounds to help give Bart Bellairs a 96-72 victory over Bluefield on Monday in his first game as head coach of the Keydets.

Gullette, a junior forward, had 12 points in the first half when VMI staked a 48-27 lead. They led by as many as 36 points in the second half over Bluefield, an NCAA Division III school.

Senior center Matt Houghton paced Bluefield (2-6) with 19 points and five rebounds while Troy Hood of Altavista chipped in 13 points.

Walk-on senior Aron Buss of Harrisonburg scored13 points in 13 minutes of play for VMI (1-0). Bobby Prince, a junior guard from Lord Botetourt High School, added 10 points and six assists.

Bellairs unveiled a three-guard, up-tempo offense and saw his team commit 30 turnovers. The Keydets attempted 34 3-point attempts, converting on eight.

Old Dominion 79, South Carolina 65: At Norfolk, Petey Sessoms scored 33 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked a shot and had two steals as the Monarchs (2-1) beat the Gamecocks (1-1). ODU had led from the opening tip and was on the verge of blowing the game open until Carey Rich hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final three minutes of the half to make it 35-29.

Duquense 62, Richmond 55: At Pittsburgh, Dwayne Butler scored 15 points, including 10 in a 22-4 second-half run, that led the Dukes to a victory over the Spiders (0-2). Daryl Oliver came off the bench to score 17 for Richmond, and Kass Weaver added 15.

Ohio 67, Virginia Tech 66: In Athens, Ohio, the Bobcats' Holly Skeen rebounded a blocked shot and scored with two seconds left in overtime to lift Ohio (1-0) to a non-conference victory. Tech (1-2) had taken a 66-65 lead on Jenny Root's layup with eight seconds remaining.

The Hokies led 54-44 in the second half before Ohio went on a 12-2 run and tied the score at 56-56 on a Natalie Britt layup with 1:03 left in regulation.

Root had 20 points while Christi Osborne had 19 for the Hokies, who committed 40 turnovers. Skeen scored 17 and Britt 15 for Ohio.

Sunday's game

VCU 65, New Orleans 62: In Hilo, Hawaii, Bernard Hopkins scored 19 points and the Rams withstood a late rally by the Privateers to win the third-place game in the Big Island Invitational.

George Byrd and Tyron McCoy added 13 points each for VCU (2-1). Tyrone Garris led New Orleans (1-2) with 14 points.
