Fire investigator Rodney Ferguson said the two-story brick house, in the 1600 block of Underhill Avenue, may have been more than 150 years old.
"We found a metal plate on the chimney dated 1837, but it's hard to say if that's the age of the house," Ferguson said.
The fire began about 3:15 a.m. and left only the masonry walls standing.
Due to the instability of the remaining structure, Ferguson said the cause of the fire will not be investigated.
