A Family Gathering will be held at the Red Cross at the end of the walk, and will include the reading of the World AIDS Day Proclamation, issued by Roanoke Mayor David Bowers. The Family Gathering also will include a Pillowcase Memorial Project, refreshments and the distribution of red ribbons, which recognize people who have died from HIV infection.
A one-man play, ``Living With ...,'' will be performed by Cy Webber at the Little Theatre on the campus of Hollins College at 7 p.m. Admission to the play is free.
An observance of World AIDS day will take place in the nation's capital from 7:45 to 8 p.m. when the staff of the White House will dim their lights to demonstrate the administration's commitment to the fight against AIDS. The Roanoke-area community is asked to join in this dimming of the lights as well.
As of the middle of this year, 17 million men, women and children worldwide have been infected with HIV. In the United States, more than 360,000 people have been diagnosed with AIDS; 220,736 of them have died. Young people in particularly are increasingly at risk for HIV/AIDS. AIDS is the sixth-leading cause of death among people age 15 to 24.
