RICHMOND FED TO TRIM STAFF BY 100

Nearly 100 of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond's 2,300 employees have accepted offers to take early retirement by spring.

The Richmond-based district has offices in Richmond; Baltimore; Charleston, W.Va.; Charlotte, N.C.; Columbia, S.C., and Culpeper.

About 325 people qualified for the program, which was announced in March as a cost-cutting move. Early retirees must leave by April 1.

It is too early to say how many of the retirees' positions will be left vacant, said Dan Bechter, a spokesman at the Richmond Fed. ``There is definitely some consolidation going on,'' Bechter said.
