UVA VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH STEPS DOWN

Karen Uhler, the head volleyball coach at the University of Virginia since 1990, resigned Tuesday and requested reassignment within the school's athletic department for family reasons.

``One of the members of my family is ill and it's important that I prioritize my life with my family in mind,'' Uhler said in a statement.

Uhler's five Virginia teams had an overall record of 71-92. Her best season was 1990, when the Cavaliers finished 20-14 and were second in the ACC Tournament.

``Karen brought an immediate burst of energy and enthusiasm for volleyball when she arrived at the University of Virginia,'' said Craig Littlepage, associate director of athletics for programs at Virginia. ``It's hard to imagine anyone working harder to promote Virginia volleyball than Karen.''
