PRINCE HOLDS COURT IN 93-76 VMI WIN

Now, the going gets tough for VMI.

Former Lord Botetourt High School star Bobby Prince had 18 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs, to lead the Keydets to a 93-76 victory over Division III Centenary (N.J.) on Tuesday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington.

On Saturday, VMI (2-0) faces Richmond to begin a seven-game grind that includes games at North Carolina, Alabama, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

``Bobby [Prince] had a mediocre - to be nice and polite - game last night [in a 96-72 victory over Bluefield] and he knew that,'' said Bart Bellairs, who is 2-0 as the Keydets' coach. ``But to bounce back and have 18 points and 11 rebounds is fantastic. And that's because the kid's a competitor.''

Centenary (2-4) competed. The Cyclones never led, but tied VMI twice in the first half before the Keydets used a 9-0 run to take a 47-38 halftime lead. VMI never led by fewer than nine points in the second half.

``We have spurts,'' Bellairs said. ``We're learning how to win and that's good. We've got a tough one coming up on Saturday [vs. Richmond] because they're going to be very hungry.''

Lawrence Gullette led the way for the Keydets with 20 points.VMI made 12 of 31 3-point attempts in the game and shot 46 percent (29-of-63) overall.

Lance Rose scored 20 points to lead Centenary. Justin Maples added 17.
