FLOYD CO. HIGH WINS PLAY COMPETITION|

Floyd County High School recently won the Three Rivers District play competition held at the high school. Three other schools - Radford, Auburn and Shawsville - took part.

Floyd's play, "Rest Stop," is about a troubled family on vacation. The cast of four included Justin Michaud as the father, Shanna Smith as the mother, Rose McCutchan as the daughter Christie and Amy Avery-Grubel as a mysterious intruder named Violet.

Shawsville ws second with "Addict," directed by teacher Patricia Rose.

Five actors were honored invidually: First place, McCutchan, Floyd; second place, Michaud, Floyd; third place, Christina Dudley, Shawsville; fourth place: Joyce Simmons, Shawsville; and fifth place, Avery-Grubel, Floyd.

"With such stiff competition from so many excellent plays, I was particularly proud of our representation," said Floyd County teacher Nan Johnson. "This is the first time in many years that we have done so well."

At the regional competition held last Saturday at Galax High School, the Floyd and Shawsville teams did not fare as well, taking fourth and seventh places respectively. "We did not do as well as we had done previously, but we were still pleased," Johnson said. The judges at the competition said "it was the highest level of competition they had ever seen in regionals," she added.
