Donor center opening

BLACKSBURG - The American Red Cross announces that a grand opening ceremony for its New River Valley Donor Center will be held today. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the facility - 130 Jackson St.

The center opened its doors on Oct. 6 and is open every Thursday from noon-6 p.m. A donor appointment line has been established in an effort to appeal to "time conscious" people, according to Bob Lutjen, donor resources director at the facility. The donor process takes about an hour - the number is 961-2207.

Volunteers are needed, says Lutjen, to assist with registration, donor aide and canteen stations at - call 382-2361 for more information.

Tree festival

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor the second annual Festival of Christmas Trees at New River Valley Mall Dec. 2 through 22 featuring 14 live trees donated and decorated by Montgomery County organizations.

Admission is $1 for adults and 50 cents for children. Participants may cast a ballot for their favorite tree. The top two trees will win cash awards to be presented to the sponsor organizations Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit local American Red Cross programs.
