Lois Bowers began translating the Danish philosopher's prayers from their French publication more than 50 years ago while still a student at Gettysburg (Pa.) College. In recent years, her husband, the Rev. George Bowers, has edited the work and added original prayers in the style of Kierkegaard with commentary from the philosopher's life and writings.
Though most of Kierkegaard's works were translated into English in the 1930s and 1940s, his prayers were not. This book is the first English publication of those meditations and is printed with the permission of the Danish repository of his works.
The Bowerses will sign copies of the books between 2 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the Good Samaritan Hospice. They also will speak on Kierkegaard's theology and philosophy at 2:15 p.m. in The Park-0ak Grove library.
