CPL. TREVOR S. DEMPSEY, son of Richard S. and Norma Dempsey of Roanoke, recently received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. He is assigned with Weapons Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Cal. He is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.
SEAMAN DEMURA S. WILLIAMS, son of Richard L. Williams Sr. of Roanoke, recently returned from operations off the coast of Haiti aboard the tank landing ship USS Spartanburg County.
While in the Caribbean Sea, Williams worked supporting the United Nations sanctions against Haiti as part of an international task force.
SEAMAN RECRUIT JEFFREY S. RUSSELL, son of Debra F. Wimmer of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1993 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.
SEAMAN RECRUIT SAMUEL D. SMITH, son of Samuel O. Smith and Diana F. Scharnus of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS LARRY M. POWELL, son of Larry M. and Shirley H. Powell of Vinton, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving at Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training Activity in Yorktown. He also re-enlisted for four years.

MARK WILHELM, son of Larry and Bonnie Bailey of Roanoke, has graduated from the Army Basic Training unit at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

TONYA LORRAINE KING, daughter of Trena Dunman of Vinton, recently graduated Paralegal Technical Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. She has received the Air Force Achievement, the Good Conduct and the The Joint Forced Commendation medals and the National Defense Ribbon.
King, who is stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base, is a 1989 Staunton River High School graduate.
CHIEF PETTY OFFICER DAVID A. KELLY, son of David P. and Mildred W. Kelly of Roanoke, recently received the Navy Commendation Medal.
He was honored for meritorious service while serving as an administrative chief with Flett Training Group, Detachment Norfolk, Little Creek, where he is currently assigned.
Kelly is a 1979 graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School.

PVT. MICHAEL W. OWENS, son of Patricia O. Tingler of New Castle, completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. in the Army National Guard.
PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS TEANO C. TUCKER, son of Mary J. Tucker of Roanoke, recently participated in a decommissioning ceremony while serving as one of the final crew members of the 38-year-old aircraft carrier USS Saratoga in Mayport, Fla.
The Saratoga was one of the first "super" carriers built after World War II. It was commissioned April 14, 1956 as "Super Sara" and patrolled the waters off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, launched countless aircraft against the North Vietnamese in 1972 and played a vital role in the capture of the luxury liner Achille Lauro hijackers in 1985.
More recently, Tucker and the crew spent two months off the coast of the former Yugoslavia supporting international sanctions in Bosnia-Herzegovina. After leaving the Adriatic Sea, Tucker joined ships from 12 other nations.
Tucker is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming Senior High School.
PFC. ALPHONZO S. CAMPBELL, son of Calvin Lewis of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training and was meritoriously promoted to his present rank.
Campbell graduated from William Fleming High School in 1993 after which he joined the U.S. Marines.
LANCE CPL. FRANK I. FRITTMAN, son of Peter Frittman and Agnes E. Frittman, both of Roanoke, has been assigned to the Marine Corps Administrative Detachment, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
Frittman is a 1988 graduate of William Byrd High School and a 1993 graduate of Radford University.
SEAMAN RECRUIT DAVID A. BARNES, a 1993 graduate of William Fleming High School, recently sailed to the Persian Gulf aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli in response to another crisis in Iraq.
Arriving in the gulf, Barnes and fellow crewmembers joined the other deployed naval forces that have been supporting the "no-fly zone" over Southern Iraq since the end of the Persian Gulf War.

Tuttle was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned with 1st Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan.

PVT. LAURA S. HAWLEY, daughter of Lawrence S. and Phyllis J. Breeding of Roanoke, recently graduated from U.S. Army Basic Training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Hawley is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School. She is now stationed at Fort Lee at Petersburg for extended training.

AIR FORCE SGT. MICHAEL L. SECRIST, son of Shelpia J. Secrist of Buchanan, recently graduated from Air Force major command non-commissioned officer academy having received advanced military leadership and management training. He is a 1975 graduate of James River High School.
