Roanoker competes in transplant games

Whitney Leftwich and Billy Wilson Fitzgerald, both of Roanoke, recently represented Virginia in the National Kidney Foundation U.S. Transplant Games in Atlanta.

Team Virginia won 25 medals at the competition, which included basketball, swimming, track, table tennis, bowling and bicycle racing.

Leftwich is a lung transplant recipient; Fitzgerald is a kidney transplant recipient.

First Aid Crew begins fund drive

The Vinton First Aid Crew has begun its annual fund drive.

The crew has mailed requests for funds to residents in Vinton and eastern Roanoke County. Funds received will go to the crew's building and equipment maintenance, for the purchase of medical supplies and for provision of the latest in training and equipment for crew members.

Roanoke CASA names new advocates

The Roanoke Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court has announced the names of 13 Court Appointed Special Advocates who were recently sworn in as officers of the court.

These volunteers completed 30 hours of training to work with children involved in abuse and neglect cases.

The special advocates are: Susan Blaylock; Suzanne Casey; Connie Cavett; Peggy Clark; Dixie Deel; Diane Dulin; Roger Dulin; Mary Dykstra; Rayner England; Beth Gimbert; Libby Richardson; Dixie Thome; and Gin Webber.
