The Virginia Department of Transportation's Salem district has announced the names of 29 employees who were honored with the Commissioner's Award for Excellence.
The annual award recognizes dedication and effectiveness on the job. Winners are selected by Commonwealth Transportation Commissioner David R. Gehr.
The Salem team of employees was awarded for its' ability to devise contract proposals for additional funding from VDOT's central office in Richmond. According the the department, the team worked overtime, seven days a week to complete the proposals. Many gave up holiday activities, while others worked snow-removal shifts, then returned to the office to work on the proposals.
As a result, nine contracts totaling $8.2 million were submitted to Richmond before the required deadline. The Salem district received 36 percent of the entire state allocation.
Award recipients are: Mike Azar, Emilee Boyd, Bob Brown, Sharon Brown, Tom Cunningham, Kimberly Dooley, Willie Hutchinson, Ron Rice, Ken Ralph, John Peery, Jim Keene, Larry Long, Sam Overstreet, Craig Manges, Donnie Robertson, Robert King, Luther Galyean, David Light, Cindy Mitchell, Robert Perdue, Ginger Quinn, Kenny Reynolds, Gary Thompson, Jerry Webb, Jackie Williams, Ed Wright, Bobby Cockram, Eddie Wallace and Bob Yates.
Festival of Trees exhibit through Dec. 24
The Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley will hold its 12th annual Festival of Trees from Friday through Dec. 24 in The Jefferson Center's Fitzpatrick Hall at 541 Luck Ave.
More than 20 decorated trees, sponsored by civic and corporate groups, will be exhibited. Balloting for the best display will determine awards in three categories. An awards ceremony will be held Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.
The festival will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $1.50 for adults and $1 for children ages 6 through 12. Children under 6 are admitted free. Special rates are available for groups of 20 or more.

Roanoker serving in state 4-H position
Julie Bolt, formerly of Roanoke, is serving as State Big Chief of the Virginia Chapter of 4-H All Stars.
All Stars are 4-H members, alumni, leaders and extension agents who are recognized for their service in the 4-H program.
Besides service in many areas of 4-H as an adult, Bolt was active in the Cave Spring 4-H Club, Roanoke Valley County Council and Virginia Tech Collegiate 4-H. She has also served as Lesser Chief and Recording Scribe of the Virginia Chapter of the All Stars.
Bolt is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Bolt of Roanoke.
