HISTORY'S SPOTLIGHTED at the third annual Stonewall Theatre Celebration 8 p.m. Saturday in Clifton Forge. Bob Campbell, formerly of the Statler Brothers, Shelly Cole and her band Silver Wolf, the Virginia Opry Gospel Quartet and its band, Gloryland, and the Mountain Heritage Cloggers will be among the entertainers helping to raise funds for the Appalfolks of America Association's Stonewall Theatre Restoration Project.
The theatre, built in 1905, is listed in both the state and national registers of historic places. The nonprofit AAA, whose purpose is to "improve the literacy and dropout rate by promoting drug-free living via programs in the literary and performing arts," uses the theatre as a performing arts center. SANTA IN SALEM will be only one of many drawing cards during Ye Olde Salem Christmas, an old-fashioned celebration of the holiday season at Library Square and Market Square Saturday from noon-5 p.m. The Salem Merchants Association, Kiwanis Club of Salem, City of Salem, Salem Junior Woman's Club, Salem Times Register and radio station WWWR-910 AM will sponsor the giving of free horse-drawn carriage rides, refreshments, music, dancing, children's games and storytelling, and an open house at the Salem Museum.
If you'd like to give back, donation boxes for cash, clothing, new toys and nonperishable foods to benefit the City of Salem D.A.R.E. program will be set up at Library Square, Market Square and Longwood Park. Rain date is Sunday, same time, same place.
SMOOTH MOVES that won dancers Peter Collins and Amy Cousins the title of Best Amateur Smooth Couple in the United States will be demonstrated as part of the entertainment at the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association's "An Affair of the Heart" dance Sunday. Collins and Cousins, also 1993 and 1994 Feather Award Winners, will also perform waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, fox trot and quickstep. You can put on your dancing shoes and do your dance, too.
Proceeds from the event, sponsored by the Martinsville Chapter of the United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association, will benefit the American Heart Association, Martinsville affiliate. TOE-TALLY COOL best describes the Roanoke Ballet Theatre's performance of "A Toyshop Holiday" Sunday at Richfield Retirement Community in Salem. The excerpt from the show, about a shop keeper who finds true love after all the toys in his store magically come to life one holiday season, is set to the music of Dimitri Shostakovich. CLASSIC CHRISTMAS is "A Christmas Carol" presented Tuesday by an ensemble of 36 actors, singers, musicians and technicians performing an array of traditional Christmas carols interwoven with Dickens' novella of Ebeneezer Scrooge and company. STRINGS SYMPHONY is assured when Poland's Wilanow Quartet performs 8 p.m. Wednesday in Roanoke College's Olin Theatre. The group, touted as one of Poland's premiere string quartets, has a discography of more than 25 recordings, has toured internationally and received numerous awards, including the prestigious Golden Orpheus. Selections will include Haydn Quartet in G major, Op. 76, No 1; Szymanowski Quartet No. 2, Op. 56 and Brahms Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 51, No. 2.
