Water office set up

IVANHOE - The Volunteers for Communities Program of Virginia Water Project has set up a regional office in the Ivanhoe community on the border of Wythe and Carroll counties.

The office, situated in a renovated wash house, serves communities throughout Virginia and surrounding states by providing a place for the program to host student volunteers.

The Ivanhoe Civic League also has been making strides in its various community improvement programs, ranging from painting and improving homes to holding a summer arts and entertainment program.

Its members recently completed renovating what will become the Ivanhoe Complex office building.

The public is invited to tour the renovated building and Virginia Water Project facilities during an open house from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday.

Town requires training

WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville will be requiring members of its Planning Commission to become certified in planning to serve on the commission.

Wytheville Town Council accepted a committee recommendation for that requirement last week.

Councilman John Jones, who presented the recommendation, said the classes he took for certification had helped him on deciding planning issues and would have been more helpful if he had taken them earlier.

Ex-minister honored

WYTHEVILLE - Thomas Sproule, a retired minister who has been active in a variety of community activities, has been added to the list of civic leaders honored by having their names placed on Wythe County's Wall of Honor located in Wytheville's Withers Park.

The park has three monuments: one for Wythe County people who lost their lives in service to their country, one for those who have distinguished themselves in sports, and the civic leaders' monument.

Chet Brown, Fred P. Brown Sr., Jack Dutton, James C. Hash Sr., Larry Lindsey and Kenny Sayers are the most recent additions to the Sports Hall of Fame monument. Sports figures are announced once a year at a Hall of Fame banquet.

People whose names are added to the civic leaders' monument are nominated by the public. A committee chooses from the names submitted. Further information on nominating someone is available by calling 223-3352.
