EXPRESS COMES UP SHORT

The Roanoke Express made a great comeback, but in the end it still was disappointed.

Steve Bogoyevac scored the lone goal in an overtime shootout as the Richmond Renegades survived losing a three-goal lead and escaped with a 6-5 victory over the Express at the Roanoke Civic Center on Saturday night.

Richmond (15-2-4), with 34 points, has a six-point lead over second-place Roanoke (12-5-4) in the East Division of the East Coast Hockey League.

The Express trailed 5-2 going into the final period, but scored three goals to force overtime. Derek Laxdal scored the first two goals of the period to complete a hat trick, and center Ilya Dubkov tied it at 5 with two minutes left in regulation with his 11th goal of the season.

A potential Roanoke victory in overtime was nullified with 12 seconds remaining when the officials ruled the puck did not cross the goal line. Roanoke coach Frank Anzalone was furious with the call.

"The whole team says it went in," Anzalone said. "[Laxdal] says it went in the net. That's the way it goes sometimes."

Both Laxdal, who played an outstanding game, and Anzalone said it was a tough loss for the Express. Even though Roanoke rallied to send the game into overtime and gained a point after trailing by three goals, they still wanted the victory.

The Renegades outscored the Express 3-1 in the second period in taking a 5-2 lead. Right wing Jay Murphy had two goals in the period to pace a Richmond attack that scored four of its five goals on power plays.

Roanoke's lone second-period score came from center Craig Herr on a power-play opportunity.

There were no six-on-six goals scored in the first two periods, which featured 17 penalties - 10 on Roanoke.

Richmond led 2-1 after a penalty-filled first period in which all three goals were scored on power plays. Roanoke received six of the eight penalties called in the period, with defenders Jon Larson and Dave Stewart each receiving 10-minute misconduct penalties

The Renegades capitalized on Larson's penalty 32 seconds later when Scott Gruhl scored his 19th goal of the season, on an assist from Murphy and Jan Benda, 14 minutes, 19 seconds into the period.

Murphy extended the Richmond advantage to 3-1 just 1:42 into the second period on a power play. Gruhl and center Shane Henry recorded the assists.

The power-play opportunity occurred when the Express received a bench minor before the period began.
