ROAD TO SALEM WAS A LONG ONE

Watching the Virginia High School League girls' basketball tournament this weekend made me realize just how far sports have come for women in Virginia in the past quarter-century.

When I moved to Roanoke in 1970, my wife, Binki, was hired as the girls' physical education teacher and coach at Roanoke Coatholic. Today, that would mean coaching in the Blue Ridge Conference against private schools.
