Barber, a redshirt freshman from Cave Spring High School, was named the ACC's rookie of the year and was a first-team all-conference selection. The cornerback led the ACC and was second in NCAA Division I-A with eight interceptions. He also broke up 11 passes and had 53 tackles.
Also honored were: fullback Charles Way, outstanding offensive player; end Mike Frederick, outstanding defensive player; defensive tackle Ryan Kuehl, Col. Frank C. McCue Award as the outstanding interior lineman; center Bryan Heath, Joe Palumbo Award for self-sacrifice, dedication and enthusiasm; safety Carl Smith, John Polzer Award for ability, sportsmanship and character; and defensive tackle Todd White, Speed Elliott Award as the most improved player.

Virginia Tech's Matt Mogel lost to 1994 NCAA heavyweight champion Kerry McCoy of Penn State in the final of the Penn State Open wrestling tournament.
Mogel, a Richmond native, won four matches in the tournament before losing 14-3 to McCoy, the top-ranked heavyweight in the nation according to Amateur Wrestling News. He pinned Jamar Gordan of Millersville in 4 minutes, 41 seconds, and won decisions over Cornell's Emer Mohr (8-1), Oklahoma's Javier Posa (5-1) and Ohio University's Scott Duneur (7-5).
