GRAND JURY INDICTS 4 MEN IN BURGLARIES

Four men charged with burglarizing several Franklin County homes - including the home of a Sheriff's Office investigator twice - were indicted by a grand jury Monday.

The four include: Euell D. Bowman, 62, of Bassett in Henry County; his son, David W. Bowman, 37, of Patrick County; James S. Brown, 40, of Bassett; and Flemon E. Worrell, 32, of Patrick County.

The men are charged with burglarizing four homes - two of which they broke into twice, according to Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney Cliff Hapgood.

One of those homes is owned by Franklin County Sheriff's Investigator Gary Shively, who was involved in the surveillance operation that caught three men as they burglarized another home in the Endicott area of the county in October.

"This was a major burglary ring," Hapgood said. "Deputies would go to one of [the homes of those charged] and take witnesses with them to look for stolen goods. When they would come back, someone else who had been burglarized would ask, `Did you see such and such?' And someone would reply, `Yeah, we saw it.' So we'd have to get another search warrant."

The four men face additional theft charges in Henry and Patrick counties, Hapgood said.

In a separate matter Monday, the grand jury indicted a 19-year-old Rocky Mount man for the attempted malicious wounding of a Franklin County High student in September.

Hapgood said Jamie Vashon Wells is charged with firing a semiautomatic weapon into the car of a 17-year-old male in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen on Virginia 40 after an argument.
