DABNEY LANCASTER COLLEGE PRESIDENT TO RETIRE IN '95

The longtime president of Dabney Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge will retire by the end of the school year, a school spokesman confirmed Monday.

John Backels, who has been at the school since 1968, informed faculty and staff of his decision on Friday.

He was expected to make an official announcement of his retirement Monday night at a meeting of the community college's board.

Backels, 64, has told associates at the college that he will retire sometime before the end of June 1995. He expects to make a final decision on his retirement date by the first of March, the school spokesman said.
