The baby was discovered by a medical secretary Sunday night after she heard a cry outside the building's employee entrance.
``I looked to my left, and I saw a brown box,'' Laleita White said. ``The baby was inside.''
Danville police are investigating the case.
Officials at Danville Regional Medical Center said the baby girl is a few days old. The baby is in the hospital's nursery.
Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Mitchell said many people have called to ask about taking in the baby.
Debbie Mahan, child welfare supervisor with the Danville Social Services department, said the child isn't available for adoption. She said the law requires her office to try to locate the baby's mother or family members first.
Officials are looking for a foster family for the baby.
