ROANOKE RUN IN ODAC AT 20 GAMES

Late in the second half of Tuesday night's men's college basketball game between Roanoke College and Randolph-Macon, the drained Yellow Jackets weakly tapped out a distress signal.

But this season at the Bast Center, SOS stands for ``Same Old Story.''

The Maroons employed their standard tactics - intense defensive pressure, balanced scoring and second-half domination - as they defeated Randolph-Macon 84-69 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.

The victory was Roanoke's 20th consecutive regular-season ODAC triumph, a school record, and improved its record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Yellow Jackets are 3-2, 1-1.

Seniors Joe Schrantz and Bryant Lee led the Maroons with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Roanoke also received offensive support from Akil Stewart (11 points), Jason Bishop (10), A.J. Hamlin (nine) and Tim Braun (eight).

The Maroons shot 56.5 percent from the floor, improving their marksmanship to better than 50 percent for the season. All 15 players on Roanoke's roster saw action, and none was on the floor for more than 27 minutes.

``I'm as satisfied as I've been'' this season, said Page Moir, the Maroons' coach. ``Our guys sort of took it to 'em in the second half.'' Roanoke led 35-30 at halftime, but went on a 46-23 tear before Moir cleared his bench with five minutes remaining.

``Schrantz made a big steal and a layup [that increased the Maroons' advantage to 39-30 at the 19-minute, 9-second mark], and once we stretched out our lead to 10 and 12 points, it gave us some elbow room,'' Moir said.

The Maroons contained Kurt Axe, Randolph-Macon's leading scorer, holding the 5-foot-8 junior to 15 points. Axe had scored 25 or more points in three of the Yellow Jackets' four games.
