GLENVAR STOMPS BOTETOURT

Glenvar went on the road and stepped up a classification in its boys' basketball season opener Tuesday night, ripping Lord Botetourt 64-49 behind Jason Darnell's 24 points.

The Cavaliers (1-1) shot only 34 percent from the field (17-of-50) in losing to the Group A Highlanders. Botetourt's Jonathan Neal (21 points) was the only Cavalier scorer in double figures.

The Eagles used a balanced scoring attack to overcome a 31-point effort by Grace Christian's Krista Summers to stay unbeaten with a non-conference win. Roanoke Valley Christian (4-0) led 16-9 after one period and led the rest of the way. The Eagles held off Grace (1-1) by making 7 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter. Foul shots played a large role in the outcome - the Eagles were 15-for-20 from the line in the game, Grace was 8-for-29.

Monday's game

Patrick Henry 50, Iolani 48: In Honolulu, reserve Devar Thompson scored 11 points and pulled in seven rebounds as the Patrick Henry boys won for the first time on it's four-game trip on Monday.

The Patriots (1-2), who had lost 81-67 Saturday to Punahou, had to watch a baseline shot by Iolani's Derek Christensen miss before claiming victory against the Hawaiian team.

Chris Combs, who has scored 52 points in three games for the Patriots, also had 11 points. Iolani's Rich Carlisle had a game-high 21 while Christensen added 18.

PH wrapped up its trip Tuesday with a game against Maryknoll.
