Alleghany (1-1) went up 52-50 on James Hughes' basket with less than three minutes to go, but Bath County tied it at 52.
After Petty scored, the Chargers (0-1) missed a shot and Rashad Worth, who scored 12 points, hit two free throws with 15 seconds left to give the Mountaineers a 56-52 lead to clinch the victory.
Todd Crawford scored 14 points to lead Alleghany. Hughes added 11.
Bath County got a game-high 18 points from Patrick Lennon - 13 in the first half. Kris Phillips added 15.

Floyd County 83, Fort Chiswell 76: In Fort Chiswell, the Buffaloes held off the Pioneers in a wild non-district opener.
Floyd County hit 17 of 21 field-goal attempts in the first half to take a big lead. Then Jody Burnett scored 13 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter as Fort Chiswell, trailing by 26 points with 6 minutes, 30 seconds left, cut its deficit to five with two minutes remaining.
The Buffaloes were paced by Brian Harman with 20 points. Harman made 14 of 16 free throws in the second half. Freshman Jason Dalton had seven rebounds and two blocked shots for Floyd County.
Grayson County 83, Rural Retreat 50: In Independence, the Blue Devils went on a 14-1 run in the game's opening minutes to take control.
Bryan Boyer finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds for Grayson County (1-0). The 6-foot-7 senior center scored nine of his points in the first quarter as the Blue Devils took a 29-6 lead. Wes Self added 14 points and Chad Shaffner scored 13 for Grayson County.
Rural Retreat (0-1) was led by Barry Ward's 13 points.
Parry McCluer 70, Wilson Memorial 42: In Fishersville, Mike McElroy scored 27 points as the Fighting Blues overwhelmed the Green Hornets in a non-district game.
It was Parry McCluer's second victory over Wilson Memorial (0-2) in five days. The Blues (2-0) won 82-32 in Buena Vista on Friday.
Parry McCluer bolted to a 39-17 halftime lead this time and never looked back. Carl Sanderson had 16 points and Chip Coleman scored 10 for the Blues.
Chris Woodson paced Wilson with 10 points.
Martinsville 66, Bassett 62: In Bassett, the Bengals stormed out of the gate, taking a 23-12 lead behind Chris Hairston's 12 first-quarter points, but the Bulldogs (2-0 overall, 2-0 district) rallied in the second half to win the Piedmont District game.
All of Martinsville's scoring came from its starters, led by Mike Martin's 24 points. Carlos Martin added 13 points and Manti Venable tossed in 12 for the Bulldogs.
Chris Hairston finished with 25 points to lead all scorers. Tyree Hairston had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Bengals (0-2, 0-2).
Laurel Park 71, Magna Vista 58: In Martinsville, the Lancers blew a 10-point first-half lead before breaking loose in the fourth quarter behind Ronta Davis, Warrick Scott and Darrell Wilson in a Piedmont District victory over the Warriors.
Davis scored eight of his 18 as Laurel Park (3-0, 3-0) outscored Magna Vista (1-1, 1-1) 28-13 in the final period. Wilson also had eight points in the fourth quarter, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and finishing with 12 points. Scott also had eight of his 18 in the last eight minutes.
Jermaine Simmons hit two 3-pointers for the Warriors, both in the fourth quarter, and finished with 18 points. Tony Hagwood had 12 of his 20 in the first half.
Fieldale-Collinsville 66, Gretna 54: In Gretna, Matt Law scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Cavaliers past the Hawks in a Piedmont District game.
Fieldale-Collinsville (2-0, 2-0) trailed 16-9 after one quarter, but came back behind Law, who hit five of the Cavaliers' eight 3-pointers. Brian Alley added 12 points for Fieldale-Collinsville.
Gretna (0-2, 0-2) got 18 points from William Merritt and 17 from Jason Tucker.
Craig County 51, Covington Boys' Home 43: In Covington, Robby Huffman hit eight of 11 free throws in the last two minutes to ice the Rockets' non-district victory.
Craig County (1-0) used a 26-point fourth quarter to seal the victory as the Indians (1-3) ran out of steam late in the game.
Jamie Fisher led the Rockets with 21 points and Huffman had 11.
Kenny Prescott led Covington Boys' Home with 26 points and 18 rebounds.
