RESCUE SQUAD FOUNDING MEMBER DIES

Herman S. Moorman, one of the original members of the first volunteer rescue squad in the world, died Tuesday. He was 91.

A native of Roanoke, Moorman was just beginning a 48-year career at Norfolk and Western Railroad when he became a member of the Roanoke Life Saving and First Aid Crew.

Created in 1928, the 10-man crew engaged in only six rescues their first year. In a 1991 newspaper story, Moorman recalled answering a rescue call by riding his bicycle to the scene.

Original member Allen Gratsy said Moorman stayed involved with the squad for years as it developed into a world-renowned life-saving organization.
