Salem homes tour to be held Sunday

A Christmas tour of several historic homes in Salem, sponsored by the Salem Museum and the Salem Historical Society, will be held Sunday from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

All five homes in the self-guided tour are along Salem's High Street. They include Monterey, Roselawn, the Morehead-Pollack House, the Johnson-Miller House and the Painter-Rohrbaugh House. All are in the 100, 200 or 400 blocks of High Street.

Mary Hill, director of the Salem Museum, said the homes represent architectural designs from the Greek Revival of the 1840s to a Sears-Roebuck frame house of the 1920s. All the homes will be decorated for the holiday and will feature an array of art works and antiques.

Tickets for the Homes Tour can be bought in advance for $8 each at the Salem Museum, Brooks-Byrd Pharmacy, Grandma's Attic, The Reproduction Shop and Christopher Gladden, Bookseller. Visitors may also purchase tickets for $10 each at the door of any of the houses included in the tour.

Further information is available at the Salem Museum 389-6760.

`Santa Claws' needs supplies for animals

The Roanoke Chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is sponsoring the annual "Santa Claws" campaign for needy animals.

Shoppers may either leave items under the trees, which are located in Krogers in Roanoke, Salem and Vinton, or take "Paws" ornaments, envelopes addressed to the SPCA, to make cash donations. The cash will be used for the group's injured animal account and its spay and neuter program.
