Two longtime Salem police officers have been promoted.
Michael C. Hess was promoted from sergeant to lieutenant; Barney R. Nunley was promoted from senior police officer to sergeant.
The promotions, effective Dec. 4, were announced by Harry T. Haskins Jr., chief of Salem police.
Hess has been with the Salem Police Department since February 1969. He has served in both the patrol and detective divisions and received the Officer of the Year Award in 1988.
He also serves as firearms instructor for Salem police and will continue that duty, Haskins said.
For the last seven years Nunley has been the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructor in Salem public schools. With his new rank he will be transferred from that duty to uniform patrol.
In March, Nunley received the Michael Bentoski Memorial Award for his work in the D.A.R.E. program.
This award, given to one person annually, was established in 1992 by the Virginia D.A.R.E. Association to honor Michael Bentoski, chief of police in Big Stone Gap, for his strong support of the D.A.R.E. program throughout Virginia.
Nunley joined the Salem police in May 1977.
Both promotions came about to fill a vacancy left with the retirement on Dec. 1 of Lt. Frank L. Pendleton after almost 40 years with the department.
Military foundation honors Roanoker
Elmer C. Carter of Roanoke was honored recently by the national headquarters of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation and was added to the roster of Founding Members of the foundation's new Golden Hearts Club.
The honor is reserved for people who have displayed "an outstanding dedication" to helping America's veterans - especially those who have been wounded by enemy action and have received the Purple Heart medal.
