JUDGE WILLIS WOODS TO RETIRE

Circuit Judge Willis A. Woods, who was appointed to the bench in 1985, says he will retire from the post March 1.

Woods notified Virginia Chief Justice Harry L. Carrico by letter this week of his plans but said he would still be available after retirement to hear cases if needed.

Woods suffered a heart attack in June, but has since returned to the bench and a regular work schedule. He is one of four judges in the 27th Judicial Circuit, which covers Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski and Wythe counties and the cities of Galax and Radford. Woods most often hears cases in Wythe, Bland and Grayson counties.

A native of Clifton Forge, Woods was a lawyer in Wytheville before his appointment as judge.
