After 12 years of exchanging gifts, employees thought "in lieu of Christmas presents, [donating to Good Neighbors] would be best," office manager Ellen Janney said.
The five cardiac surgeons "give suffering people a second chance, a renewed life and improvement in their quality of life," Janney wrote in a letter accompanying the contribution.
Janney and co-workers Marie, Mary, Louise, Janet and Jean hope this starts a trend among other office staffs who want to buy Christmas presents.
Roanoke Area Ministries uses every dollar collected in the Good Neighbors fund, which runs through Dec. 31, to help residents meet fuel, utility, medical and other emergency needs.
