Carol Edmonds started work late last month, replacing Jeff Lunsford who was promoted in October to become assistant county administrator.
The county finance director is responsible for developing the county budget, a process that begins this month and ends with the adoption of tax rates in late March or early April.
Edmonds, 39, spent the last 11 years working on state budgeting in Richmond.
"I am very happy to have Carol on board with us," said County Administrator Betty Thomas. "Next year's budget will undoubtedly be a challenge and we will be making use of Carol's extensive budgeting experience."
For the past five years Edmonds worked as financial manager for the state Council on Day Care and Early Childhood Programs. Before that she worked as a senior budget analyst with the state Department of Planning and Budget, where she specialized in health and human services budgets. She earlier worked for the state Department of Information Technology.
Edmonds graduated from Christiansburg High School, Radford University and Virginia Commonwealth University, where she received a master of public administration degree.
