CANSECO TRADED TO RED SOX

Jose Canseco was traded to the Boston Red Sox from the Texas Rangers on Friday for outfielder Otis Nixon and minor league third baseman Luis Ortiz.

Canseco, 30, hit 31 home runs with 90 RBI in 111 games of the strike-shortened season. The former AL MVP and Rookie of the Year batted .282 and stole 15 bases.

Boston also is thought to be seeking Houston's Steve Finley to replace the void left by Nixon's departure.

The Rangers wanted a speedy leadoff hitter, preferably someone who adds outfield defense. Nixon, 36 next month, stole 42 bases and was on pace to break Boston's record of 54 steals set by Tommy Harper.

Warren was not driving car

The lawyer for paralyzed Seattle Seahawks player Mike Frier said that Lamar Smith, not star running back Chris Warren, was driving the car that slammed into a utility pole and injured all three.

Richard Bardi of Boston thus joined agents for Smith and Warren, who earlier contradicted police reports that Warren was at the wheel.

Warren, the AFC's leading rusher, was arrested for investigation of vehicular assault after the Dec.1 wreck near team headquarters in Kirkland, Wash.

Frier, a 299-pound defensive tackle from Appalachian State, is not expected to walk again. The accident broke his neck and damaged his spinal cord, leaving him without any movement in his legs or hands.

In Lumberton, N.C., a motion to dismiss charges against one of two men accused of killing retired basketball star Michael Jordan's father was delayed. The hearing before Superior Court Judge Gregory Weeks, who will decide on the motion next month, was unusual because a former prosecutor was called to the stand to defend his handling of the case.

The motion was made by attorneys for Daniel Andre Green, 20, of Lumberton. Green and Larry Martin Demery, 19, of Rowland, are charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in the death of James Jordan.

Defense lawyer Woodberry Bowen sought the dismissal because former District Attorney Richard Townsend delayed handing over potentially helpful information to the defense for more than a year.
